Can a smart glucose monitor keep diabetics out of the hospital?

NCT ID NCT07221812

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether giving people with diabetes a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) when they leave the hospital helps them control their blood sugar better than traditional finger-stick testing. 120 participants will be randomly assigned to use either a CGM or finger sticks for 3 months after discharge. The goal is to see if the CGM leads to fewer hospital readmissions and better overall glucose management.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Continuous Glucose Monitor (Dexcom G7)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that using CGMs after hospital discharge helps people with diabetes better control their blood sugar and avoid returning to the hospital.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study (120 people) at a single VA center, so results may not apply to everyone. The device itself is generally safe, but false alarms or user error could cause stress or incorrect treatment decisions.
