Neck stretching may beat placebo for pinched nerve pain

NCT ID NCT05952167

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether an intensive five-day neck traction program reduces pain and disability from cervical radiculopathy (a pinched nerve in the neck) better than a placebo traction. 206 adults with the condition will be randomly assigned to real or placebo traction. The goal is to see if the traction itself provides real relief beyond the placebo effect.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
intensive cervical traction (a physiotherapy procedure)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide a simple, low-cost, non-surgical option to reduce neck pain and disability from pinched nerves.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small, early-stage trial comparing traction to a placebo. Previous studies have shown mixed results, so there is no guarantee traction will prove effective.
