Brain procedure may weaken immune defenses, study warns

NCT ID NCT05621850

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looks at how a brain procedure called embolization affects the immune system. Researchers will take blood samples from 78 patients before and after the procedure to measure immune markers. They want to understand why patients with brain arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) who get this treatment seem to develop more severe lung infections. The study compares these patients to those treated for brain aneurysms.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) from embolization implant

What this could lead to

If it works, this could help doctors understand why some patients get more severe lung infections after brain embolization and possibly lead to better prevention strategies.

What could go wrong

This is a small observational study (78 participants) that only measures immune markers, not treatment outcomes. It may not prove a direct link between the procedure and infection risk.
