Which vein is best for hard-to-stick patients? new study aims to find out.
NCT ID NCT04265703
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study compares three different sites (internal jugular, subclavian, and innominate veins) for placing a central line using ultrasound in critically ill patients whose neck veins collapse or are very small. The goal is to see which site has the lowest failure rate on the first try. 315 adults needing a central line and showing vein collapse will be randomly assigned to one of the three approaches.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could identify the best vein site for placing central lines in patients with hard-to-find veins, making the procedure safer and more efficient.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage comparative study, not testing a new drug or device. Results may not apply to all patients or settings, and the best site may still have risks like infection or failure.
