New blood recycling method may cut bleeding in High-Risk heart surgery

NCT ID NCT06425614

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This trial tests whether a new filtration-based device that recycles a patient's own blood during heart surgery can reduce bleeding better than the standard centrifugation-based device. The study includes adults undergoing high-risk on-pump cardiac surgery. The goal is to see if preserving platelets along with red blood cells improves clotting and reduces the need for transfusions or repeat surgeries.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

autotransfusion device (filtration-based vs centrifugation-based)

What this could lead to

If the new filtration device works better, it could reduce bleeding, transfusions, and hospital stays for high-risk heart surgery patients.

What could go wrong

This is a single trial with 570 patients; results may not apply to all surgeries, and the new device may not improve outcomes as expected.
