Hair loss breakthrough? study tests top treatments for CCCA

NCT ID NCT04207931

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at 250 African-American women with a type of scarring hair loss called CCCA. Researchers will compare how well different treatments—like steroid creams, steroid injections, an oral antibiotic, and minoxidil—work over 18 months. The goal is to see which approach best slows hair loss and encourages regrowth.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Topical steroids (clobetasol, betamethasone, fluocinonide), triamcinolone acetonide injections, doxycycline, minoxidil

What this could lead to

If successful, this study could identify which combination of treatments works best to stop hair loss and promote regrowth in women with CCCA.

What could go wrong

This is an observational comparison of existing treatments, not a test of a new drug. Results may not apply to all patients, and some treatments have side effects like skin thinning or antibiotic resistance.
