Castor oil cocktail may shorten labor for First-Time moms

NCT ID NCT06325007

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether drinking a mixture of castor oil and orange juice before using a balloon catheter can shorten the time from labor induction to delivery in first-time mothers. 142 women will be randomly assigned to receive either the castor oil drink plus the balloon or just the balloon alone. The goal is to see if the combination safely speeds up the process and reduces the need for additional interventions.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
castor oil
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, low-cost way to speed up labor induction for first-time mothers.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 142 participants, so results may not apply widely. Castor oil can cause nausea or cramping, and the combination may not shorten labor as hoped.
