Cash for cribs: study tests if money boosts baby health
NCT ID NCT06923371
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study looks at whether giving extra cash to pregnant women and new moms in Appalachia helps their babies grow better and improves the mothers' mental health. About 1,250 women will be randomly assigned to receive either a higher or lower amount of cash support. Researchers will track preterm births, low birth weight, NICU stays, and mothers' depression scores over 18 months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Direct cash support (high or low amount)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could show that giving money directly to pregnant women improves birth outcomes and maternal mental health, pointing toward a simple policy change to help families in need.
What could go wrong
This is an observational-style trial, not testing a drug or treatment. Results may show only small differences between cash amounts, and factors like personal choices or local healthcare access could affect outcomes.
