Immune cells engineered to fight mesothelioma enter human testing

NCT ID NCT07510815

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This early-phase trial tests a new treatment for people with mesothelioma that cannot be removed by surgery or has come back after standard therapy. The treatment uses donor immune cells (natural killer cells) that are engineered in a lab to recognize and attack two proteins found on mesothelioma tumors. The study has two parts: first to find a safe dose, then to see if the treatment can shrink tumors. About 36 adults will take part.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

engineered immune cells (CAR-NK cells) targeting mesothelin and FAP proteins, plus chemotherapy drugs fludarabine and cyclophosphamide

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a new treatment option for mesothelioma that is hard to treat with standard therapies.

What could go wrong

This is an early phase 1/2 trial with only 36 participants, so it is too soon to know if it will be effective or safe for many people. There are risks of serious side effects like cytokine release syndrome or organ inflammation.
