Could a simple pill keep nasopharyngeal cancer away?
NCT ID NCT07248670
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This Phase III trial tests whether adding a low-dose chemotherapy pill (capecitabine) after standard chemoradiation helps prevent cancer from returning in people with high-risk nasopharyngeal cancer. About 252 participants with stage T1-2N1M0 disease and certain high-risk features will be randomly assigned to receive capecitabine or just observation. The study focuses on those who still have detectable EBV DNA during radiation, a marker of higher risk.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
capecitabine (a chemotherapy drug taken by mouth)
What this could lead to
If successful, adding capecitabine after standard chemoradiation could lower the chance of cancer returning in high-risk patients.
What could go wrong
This is a Phase III trial, but only for a specific high-risk group. The benefit may be modest, and capecitabine can cause side effects like hand-foot syndrome or diarrhea.
