Video navigators boost cancer screening in deaf community
NCT ID NCT06492993
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested whether community health navigators who use American Sign Language (ASL) via videoconferencing could help deaf, deafblind, and hard-of-hearing adults complete recommended cancer screenings. The 184 participants were aged 45-80 and had early hearing loss. The navigators provided education and support over several sessions to guide them through the screening process.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Community health navigator support via videoconferencing
What this could lead to
If successful, this approach could improve cancer screening rates among deaf and hard-of-hearing adults who use ASL, potentially catching cancers earlier.
What could go wrong
This is a completed study with 184 participants, but results may not apply to all deaf communities or all cancer types. The intervention relies on participant willingness and access to videoconferencing.
