First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether watching a short video of flickering black and white squares (called Dynamic Visual Noise) can reduce alcohol cravings and drinking in young adults who drink weekly. 62 college students will either watch the flickering video or a still image every day for a week. Researchers will measure changes in cravings, drinking, and attention to alcohol cues.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Dynamic Visual Noise (DVN) - a brief video of flickering black and white squares

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple, non-drug tool to help people manage alcohol cravings.

What could go wrong

This is a very small, early-stage study with only 62 college students. The effect may be small or not last, and results may not apply to heavier drinkers or the general public.
