Can less calcium be just as good after thyroid removal?
NCT ID NCT07577570
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study looks at whether taking a lower dose of calcium (twice a day) works as well as a higher dose (four times a day) to prevent low calcium symptoms in the two weeks after thyroid surgery. About 50 adults who develop mild low calcium after surgery will be split into two groups. The goal is to see if the lower dose can prevent symptoms like tingling or muscle cramps just as effectively.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
calcium carbonate
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that a lower calcium dose is enough to prevent symptoms after thyroid surgery, reducing pill burden.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study with only 50 people, so results may not apply broadly. The lower dose might not prevent symptoms as well as the higher dose.
