Blood thinner showdown: could one drug save your brain from dementia?

NCT ID NCT03061006

First seen May 16, 2026 · Last updated May 16, 2026

Summary

This study looked at whether two different blood thinners—dabigatran and warfarin—could help prevent dementia and memory loss in people over 65 with atrial fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat). About 100 participants were followed for two years with memory tests and brain scans. The goal was to see if better blood-thinning could protect the brain from small clots and bleeding that might lead to cognitive decline.
