Brain tumor drug trial halted before results
NCT ID NCT01068782
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested the drug cabozantinib in 19 people with a severe type of brain tumor (grade IV astrocytic tumors) that had come back after initial treatment. The goal was to see if the drug could shrink tumors or slow progression. However, the company stopped the trial early for business reasons, so no effectiveness data were collected. The study only provides safety information from a small group.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
cabozantinib (XL-184)
What this could lead to
If it had succeeded, this could have pointed toward a new treatment option for recurrent brain tumors.
What could go wrong
The trial was terminated early for business reasons before any efficacy data were collected, so we don't know if cabozantinib works for this cancer. Only 19 people enrolled, making results very limited.
