Could a common drug ease antipsychotic side effects without harming mental health?
NCT ID NCT07386080
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests whether cabergoline, a drug that lowers the hormone prolactin, is safe for people with schizophrenia who have high prolactin levels due to antipsychotic medication. About 146 adults will receive either cabergoline or a placebo for 12 weeks, and researchers will compare changes in their psychiatric symptoms. The goal is to see if cabergoline can treat the hormone side effects without making schizophrenia worse.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
cabergoline
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide a safe way to manage hormone side effects from antipsychotic medications without worsening schizophrenia symptoms.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 146 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Cabergoline might not be safer than placebo, or it could affect psychiatric symptoms.
