New study tests if cutting alcohol boosts bystander action against sexual assault

NCT ID NCT05873413

First seen May 04, 2026 · Last updated May 04, 2026

Summary

This study looks at whether teaching people how to step in during sexual risk situations works better when combined with a program to reduce drinking. About 450 heavy drinkers aged 18-25 will be split into three groups: bystander training alone, bystander training plus alcohol reduction, or a stress-management control. Researchers will track real-life helping behaviors and alcohol use over 9 months using daily diaries and a virtual reality simulation.
