First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This pilot study will enroll 100 veterans aged 35 and older who were exposed to burn pits during military service. Participants will undergo a series of cancer screening tests, including a multi-cancer blood test, nasal swab, and various exams, over three years. The goal is to see if this intensive screening is feasible and satisfactory for veterans, and to explore new tools for early cancer detection.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Multi-cancer blood test and nasal swab

What this could lead to

If successful, this study could show that intensive screening helps detect cancer earlier in veterans exposed to burn pits, potentially leading to better outcomes.

What could go wrong

This is a small pilot study (100 people) that is not yet recruiting. It aims to test feasibility and satisfaction, not to prove that screening saves lives. The results may not apply to all veterans.
