Syringe exchange clinics offer on-the-spot addiction meds, study finds better engagement

NCT ID NCT03150173

First seen Jan 08, 2026 · Last updated Apr 28, 2026 · Updated 18 times

Summary

This study tested whether giving buprenorphine (a medication for opioid addiction) directly at syringe exchange programs helps people stay in treatment better than sending them to a separate clinic. 97 syringe exchange participants with opioid addiction were enrolled. The main goal was to see if more people had an active buprenorphine prescription after 30 days when starting treatment at the syringe exchange versus a referral.
