Could a simple mouthwash keep your Mouth's bacteria healthy?

NCT ID NCT04973358

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study investigates whether a specific mouthwash (buccotherm) helps maintain a balanced and healthy community of bacteria in the mouth, compared to a placebo mouthwash. Healthy adults with at least 20 natural teeth will use the mouthwash twice daily for 14 weeks. Researchers will use advanced DNA sequencing to track changes in the types and diversity of oral bacteria, aiming to see if the mouthwash supports a healthy microbiome rather than disrupting it.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

buccotherm mouthwash

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that certain mouthwashes support a healthy oral microbiome, potentially reducing risks of cavities, gum disease, and other health issues linked to oral bacteria.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage study with a small number of participants. The mouthwash may not meaningfully change the microbiome compared to placebo, and any benefits for disease prevention remain speculative.
