New study aims to keep severely obese patients off breathing machines

NCT ID NCT05918575

First seen Oct 31, 2025 · Last updated May 21, 2026 · Updated 26 times

Summary

This study looks at whether giving noninvasive breathing support right after removing the breathing tube can lower the chance that severely obese patients will need the tube put back in. About 250 adults with a BMI of 40 or higher who have been on a ventilator for at least 24 hours will be randomly assigned to receive either standard care or extra breathing support. The goal is to reduce complications like pneumonia and shorter hospital stays.
