School lesson aims to help kids fight air pollution

NCT ID NCT02471872

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

The BREATHE study tests whether a one-hour interactive lesson on air pollution can change how middle-school students think and act about pollution. About 600 students will be split into two groups: one gets the air pollution lesson, the other a lesson on vaccines. Researchers will track their knowledge and behavior over 12 months using questionnaires. The goal is to see if education can help reduce exposure to pollution, especially in low-income communities of color that are most affected.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that a simple school lesson can help kids in polluted areas make choices that reduce their exposure to air pollution.

What could go wrong

This is a small pilot study, so results may not apply broadly. It relies on questionnaires, not actual health measurements, and behavior change may not last.
