Surgeons test transplant trick to save reconstructed breasts

NCT ID NCT05373069

Summary

This study tested if a technique used in organ transplants could improve outcomes for breast reconstruction surgery. In 18 women who had a mastectomy for breast cancer, surgeons briefly interrupted and restored blood flow to the abdominal tissue flap before using it for reconstruction. The goal was to see if this 'preconditioning' reduced painful, hard lumps of dead fat tissue, a common complication after this type of surgery.
