Could shaving extra tissue during breast surgery reduce second operations?

NCT ID NCT07244588

First seen Nov 25, 2025 · Last updated May 05, 2026 · Updated 19 times

Summary

This study tests a technique called 'tumor bed cavity shaving' during breast-conserving surgery for early-stage breast cancer. Instead of checking the removed tissue under a microscope during the operation (frozen section), surgeons will shave a thin layer of tissue from around the surgical cavity. The goal is to see if this method is as safe and effective at ensuring all cancer is removed, while potentially saving time and money. The study will involve 30 women and track how many need a second surgery due to remaining cancer cells.
