Experimental drug combo aims to make radiation safer for kids with deadly brain tumor
NCT ID NCT02864888
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This phase 3 trial tests whether adding two experimental drugs (Atengenal and Astugenal) to standard radiation affects heart rhythm in children aged 3–21 with newly diagnosed diffuse intrinsic brainstem glioma. The study will enroll 30 participants and monitor heart electrical activity via ECGs. It runs alongside a larger efficacy study comparing the combination to radiation alone.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Atengenal (A10) and Astugenal (AS2-1) combined with radiation
What this could lead to
If successful, this could point toward a safer way to treat brainstem glioma in children by combining antineoplaston therapy with radiation.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage safety study (30 participants) focused on heart rhythm effects, not yet testing whether the treatment actually works. The antineoplaston approach is controversial and unproven for this cancer.
