Scientists watch Brain's garbage disposal during sleep

NCT ID NCT02311374

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study used MRI scans to see if the brain removes waste more actively during sleep than when awake. Forty healthy adults were scanned after a good night's rest and after sleep deprivation. The goal was to measure differences in water movement in the brain, which may reflect the glymphatic system's cleaning activity.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help scientists understand how the brain cleans itself during sleep, potentially pointing toward ways to prevent brain diseases.

What could go wrong

This is a very early, small study (40 people) that only observes brain activity. It does not test any treatment, so it may not lead to direct medical benefits.
