Brain implant gives voice to the locked-in: new hope for communication
NCT ID NCT02224469
First seen Jan 05, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 21 times
Summary
This study tested a new brain implant that helps people with locked-in syndrome communicate. The implant records brain signals from the surface of the brain and sends them wirelessly to a device that can spell words or control the environment. Six participants tried the system at home, and the goal was to see if they could reliably produce a brain signal to operate a spelling device.
