Nurses help find more organ donors in critical brain injury cases

NCT ID NCT03765814

Summary

This study tested a standardized procedure, led by transplant coordinators (often nurses), to select which seriously brain-injured patients were most likely to progress to brain death within 48 hours. The goal was to identify more potential organ donors early, so medical care could be continued solely for that purpose, ultimately increasing the number of transplants. It involved 83 patients in France who had severe brain damage and for whom a decision had been made to withdraw life-sustaining treatment.
