Brain zap study aims to map mental health treatments
NCT ID NCT05322239
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study uses a non-invasive brain stimulation technique called theta burst stimulation to see how it changes the way different parts of the brain communicate. Researchers will measure brain activity in 200 healthy, right-handed adults before and after stimulation. The goal is to build a model that could one day help personalize brain stimulation treatments for mental illness.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Theta burst stimulation (a type of transcranial magnetic stimulation using magnetic pulses)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help doctors predict which brain stimulation treatments work best for mental health conditions like depression.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage study in healthy volunteers, not patients. It measures brain activity, not symptoms, so it may not directly lead to new treatments.
