Scientists to scan brains moments after death – what will they find?
NCT ID NCT07477028
First seen Mar 18, 2026 · Last updated Apr 30, 2026 · Updated 10 times
Summary
This study will use a special brain-computer interface and artificial intelligence to look for organized brain activity in people right after clinical death (when the heart stops) but before brain death is declared. Researchers want to see if there are hidden cognitive signals, like memory or awareness, during this time. The study will enroll 20 adults with terminal illness or severe trauma who have a do-not-resuscitate order. It does not offer any treatment, but aims to better understand the dying brain.
