New custom thumb brace could ease pain and improve grip for arthritis patients

NCT ID NCT06267469

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests a custom-made thumb brace (thermoplastic orthosis) for people with rheumatoid arthritis who have a boutonniere deformity, a condition where the thumb bends abnormally. About 60 women aged 18-65 will be split into two groups: one gets the custom brace, the other a standard factory-made brace. Researchers will measure grip strength, dexterity, pain, and satisfaction to see which brace works better.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
thermoplastic orthosis (custom thumb brace)
What this could lead to
If successful, this custom brace could offer better hand function and pain relief for people with boutonniere deformity from rheumatoid arthritis.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 60 participants, all women. The results may not apply to everyone, and the custom brace might not be better than standard braces.
