Could a flexible guide make emergency intubation safer?
NCT ID NCT06307392
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether using a bougie—a thin, flexible guide—on the first attempt helps doctors insert a breathing tube more successfully in emergency situations outside the hospital. About 710 adults needing emergency intubation will be randomly assigned to receive either a bougie-assisted or standard tube placement. The goal is to see if the bougie increases first-attempt success and reduces complications like low oxygen or heart rate drops.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
bougie (a flexible guide used to help insert a breathing tube)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could make emergency intubation safer and more successful on the first try, reducing risks like low oxygen or heart problems.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small, early-stage trial in a specific setting, so results may not apply broadly. The bougie might not improve success rates and could cause rare complications like injury.
