Botox injection tested to calm painful 'Nutcracker' esophagus

NCT ID NCT01955174

Summary

This study tested whether injecting botulinum toxin (Botox) into the lower esophagus could safely reduce symptoms like chest pain and trouble swallowing in people with hypercontractile esophageal motility disorders. In this small, double-blind trial, 24 participants were randomly assigned to receive either the real injection or a sham procedure. Researchers measured changes in symptom scores, quality of life, and manometry patterns over a year to see if the treatment was effective.
