Botox shot before surgery aims to make hernia repair safer

Summary
This study is testing if a single Botox injection into the side abdominal muscles several weeks before a major hernia repair surgery makes it easier for surgeons to fully close the muscle wall. About 188 adults with very large hernias will be randomly assigned to receive either the Botox injection or a placebo (saltwater) shot before their standard surgery. Researchers will track if the abdomen can be closed completely, along with recovery time, complications, pain, and quality of life for up to two years.
