Breakthrough Blood-Cleaning tech fights hidden transfusion dangers

NCT ID NCT03737669

Summary

This study tested a new technology called Mirasol that treats donated blood to kill germs before it's given to patients. Researchers compared it to standard blood in 2,000 anemic patients in Uganda to see if it could prevent infections like malaria, hepatitis, and HIV from being passed on during a transfusion. The goal was to make blood transfusions safer, especially in areas where infections are common.
