Blood flow cuffs + easy cycling: a safer way to rebuild muscle in seniors?
NCT ID NCT07291765
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study tests whether using blood flow restriction cuffs during low-intensity stationary cycling can safely improve muscle strength and mobility in older adults recovering from a hip fracture. Sixty hospitalized patients over age 65 will be randomly assigned to either real or sham blood flow restriction while cycling. The goal is to find a gentler alternative to heavy weight training for frail seniors.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Blood flow restriction device (cuffs) used during stationary cycling
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a safer way for frail older adults to rebuild muscle and mobility without heavy weights.
What could go wrong
This is a small early-stage trial with only 60 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The intervention involves restricting blood flow, which carries risks like bruising or clotting in vulnerable patients.
