New blood test could Fine-Tune treatment for iron overload disease

NCT ID NCT00007150

Summary

This study is testing a simple blood test to better guide treatment for people with hereditary hemochromatosis, a condition where the body absorbs too much iron, which can damage organs. The main treatment is regular blood draws (phlebotomy) to lower iron levels. Researchers want to see if monitoring red blood cell size (MCV) is as good as or better than the standard test at determining when to draw blood. They will also check if keeping iron very low helps heal liver damage and arthritis, and explore if the drawn blood can be safely used for other patients needing transfusions.
