Simple stent may slash bile leaks after liver surgery

NCT ID NCT01469442

First seen Apr 15, 2026 · Last updated Apr 25, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study tested whether placing a temporary drain (stent) in the bile duct during liver surgery could prevent bile leaks afterward. 304 adults having at least two liver segments removed were randomly assigned to get the stent or not. The goal was to see if the stent could reduce bile leaks from about 15% down to 5%.
