New tests aim to cut unnecessary antibiotics for lung infections in hospitals

NCT ID NCT05483309

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study looked at whether using CT scans and a rapid sputum test (FilmArray) can improve diagnosis of hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP). Currently, chest X-rays are often unclear, leading to misdiagnosis and overuse of antibiotics. The trial enrolled 220 adults with suspected HAP to see if these modern tests could help doctors give the right antibiotics faster. Since this is a feasibility study, its main goal was to see if a larger, more definitive trial is possible.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

CT scan and FilmArray Pneumonia Panel (rapid sputum test)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a larger trial that shows how to diagnose hospital-acquired pneumonia more accurately, reduce unnecessary antibiotics, and slow antibiotic resistance.

What could go wrong

This is a small feasibility study, not a full trial. It only checks if a larger trial is possible, so it won't directly prove that these tests improve patient outcomes.
