Smart pump aims to outsmart surgical infections

NCT ID NCT05253339

Summary

This study tested a new, more precise way to give a common antibiotic (cefoxitin) to patients having colon or rectal surgery. The goal was to see if using a 'smart' IV pump that adjusts the dose based on a patient's weight and kidney function could prevent surgical site infections better than the standard quick injection method. Researchers compared infection rates in nearly 2,500 patients who received the antibiotic by one of these two methods.
