First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether betaine, a natural substance found in the body, can reduce liver injury in people with MASH (a serious fatty liver disease). Seventy participants will take either betaine or placebo pills for 24 weeks, with follow-up for another 24 weeks. The main goal is to see if betaine lowers a blood-based risk score for advanced liver disease.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Betaine

What this could lead to

If it works, betaine could offer a simple, natural supplement to reduce liver injury in people with MASH.

What could go wrong

This is an early Phase 2 trial with only 70 people. Betaine may not improve liver health more than placebo, and results may not apply to everyone with MASH.
