Blood test may end need for live wasp stings to check allergy treatment
NCT ID NCT04438525
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a blood test called BAT inhibition can replace live insect sting challenges for people with wasp venom allergy. Currently, sting challenges are the only reliable way to see if venom immunotherapy is working, but they are not widely available. Researchers will compare the blood test results with sting challenge outcomes in 219 adults to see if the blood test can accurately measure protection.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
blood test (BAT inhibition)
What this could lead to
If successful, this blood test could replace live sting challenges, making it easier and safer to check if venom immunotherapy is protecting patients from allergic reactions.
What could go wrong
This is a diagnostic study, not a treatment trial. The test may not prove reliable enough to replace sting challenges, and results need confirmation in a larger group.
