Is back surgery just a placebo? groundbreaking trial puts common operation to the test

NCT ID NCT07418944

Summary

This study aims to find out if a common back operation (microdiscectomy) truly helps people with sciatica pain from a slipped disc, or if the benefits come from the placebo effect of just having surgery. Researchers will compare the real surgery to a 'sham' or placebo surgery in 122 adults whose leg pain hasn't improved after at least six weeks of other treatments. The goal is to provide clear evidence to help patients and doctors make better decisions about treatment.
