NCT ID NCT06618534
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether a single dose of azithromycin can eliminate meningococcal bacteria from the nose and throat of healthy college students. Over 700 students participated, and researchers checked for bacterial clearance two weeks after treatment. The goal is to find a new way to prevent the spread of meningococcal infections.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
azithromycin
What this could lead to
If effective, azithromycin could be used to reduce the spread of meningococcal bacteria in close-contact settings like college dorms.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed Phase 2 trial in healthy students, so results may not apply to the general population. Azithromycin may also contribute to antibiotic resistance.
