New drug aims to wipe out lingering cancer DNA after standard treatment

NCT ID NCT05414032

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This phase 2 study tests a drug called AZD2936 in people with high-risk head and neck cancer who still have traces of cancer DNA in their blood after completing standard treatment. The drug is designed to boost the immune system to find and destroy these remaining cancer cells. About 100 participants will be enrolled to see if the drug can clear the cancer DNA and prevent the disease from returning.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

AZD2936 (an antibody that boosts the immune system to fight cancer)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could offer a way to eliminate remaining cancer cells after standard treatment, potentially preventing the cancer from coming back.

What could go wrong

This is an early phase 2 trial with only 102 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The drug can cause immune-related side effects, and it may not clear the cancer DNA in all patients.
