Eye test could spot ICU confusion early
NCT ID NCT05248035
First seen Jan 12, 2026 · Last updated Apr 30, 2026 · Updated 23 times
Summary
This study looks at whether a fast, painless eye test (automated pupillometry) can predict delirium—a state of sudden confusion—in intensive care patients who need a breathing machine. Delirium is common and serious, but current screening methods take time and training. The researchers will measure pupil responses in 213 adults on day 3 of ventilation and see if those results can forecast delirium over the next two weeks. This is an observational study, not a treatment, so it aims to improve detection rather than cure or control the condition.
