Can a simple eye-tracking test spot autism in babies before their first birthday?

NCT ID NCT05916430

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study is testing whether a portable eye-tracking device can accurately screen 9-month-old infants for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Over 2,000 babies will watch short videos while cameras track their eye movements. Researchers will then compare these results with standard autism diagnoses made at 24 months. If the device works well, it could lead to much earlier detection and support for children with autism.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

EarliPoint Investigational Device (eye-tracking test)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could enable routine, objective autism screening in infants as young as 9 months, allowing earlier support and intervention.

What could go wrong

The trial is still recruiting and results are not yet available. The eye-tracking test may not be accurate enough to replace current diagnostic methods, and early screening could cause unnecessary worry or false positives.
