Brain scans probe if ancient oil scent can lift mood
NCT ID NCT07384312
Summary
This study tested whether smelling a traditional Chinese herbal oil (Cang-ai) for one month could help reduce symptoms of depression. Researchers enrolled 60 young adults with mild to moderate depression and had half smell the Cang-ai oil daily, while the other half smelled a comparison oil (bergamot). They used special brain imaging and standard depression questionnaires to see if the treatment changed brain activity or improved mood scores.
