This trial asks whether apixaban or rivaroxaban, two standard blood thinners, causes fewer bleeding problems during the first three months of treatment for acute pulmonary embolism (blood clots in the lungs). About 540 adults with confirmed pulmonary embolism will be randomly assigned to one of the two medications. Inclusion Criteria: * CT pulmonary angiography-confirmed acute PE * Intraluminal pulmonary arterial filling defect Exclusion Criteria: * Hemophilia or other bleeding disorder * Known platelet disorder * Previous major bleeding * Active bleeding * Pregnancy or lactation * Creatinine clearance \< 30 mL/min * Indication for therapeutic anticoagulation other than VTE
