Could a Once-Daily pill prevent deadly clots in cancer patients?

NCT ID NCT07005024

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares two different dosing schedules of the blood thinner apixaban (Eliquis) against no blood thinner in about 996 cancer patients at moderate risk for blood clots. Participants take either 2.5 mg twice daily, 5 mg once daily, or no anticoagulant for 6 months. The goal is to see if a simpler once-daily dose is as safe and effective as the standard twice-daily dose at preventing clots and reducing deaths.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Apixaban (Eliquis), a blood thinner

What this could lead to

If successful, this could provide a simpler, once-daily blood thinner option to prevent dangerous clots in cancer patients, potentially reducing deaths and hospitalizations.

What could go wrong

This is a Phase 3 trial, but it's still testing a new dosing schedule. The once-daily dose may not work as well as the standard twice-daily dose, and any blood thinner carries a risk of serious bleeding.
